ABSTRACT
The 30-month R&D project called “PKU-Smart-Sensor, Realization and validation of a Point-of-Care system, for home-testing monitoring of phenylalanine in patients with hyperphenylalaninemias,” was developed by Infobiotech (as a partner) with the collaboration of biotechnology companies, the University of Catania, the University of Messina and the National Research Council.
The results of the project have been registered in the patent entitled “Method and device for detection of phenylalanine in biological samples,” which Infobiotech co-owns (patent 102022000027090).
OBJECTIVES
The project resulted in the development of a portable Point-of-Care (PoC) demonstrator for monitoring phenylalanine (Phe) levels in patients with hyperphenylalaninemias.
The project also included evaluation of analytical performance with real samples, the latter characterized from a genetic and genomic point of view (phenotype/genotype characterization) using high-throughput NGS and microarray platforms. Finally, a demonstration was performed in a real operating environment (at a regional reference center for hyperphenylalaninemias).
